María Figueira (pronounced fee–gay–rah) is an Argentinean-American designer who graduated with a BFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design.
An individual with a keen sense of appreciation for those things new and unknown, she strives to maintain a clean and smart simplicity throughout her work. In regards to her decision to pursue a Furniture Design degree, which might be considered too specific for some, Maria reasons that it is fundamental to understand design as it relates to the human scale. Thus, her inspiration can be traced to the most basic human interactions and experiences.
While at RISD, she completed a concentration in Belief Systems from the History, Philosophy and Social Studies department as a means to expand on her design philosophy. Both at Partly Sunny and with the Architecture department, as part of Design/Build experiences, Maria not only developed an affinity for collaborative design, but also gained an understanding of sustainability. Before entering her last year at RISD, she completed an internship with established, New York City-based RichBrilliantWilling. After graduating she moved to London to pursue an internship with acclaimed designer Tom Dixon, leading to a permanent position within Design Research Studio.
